NITOC CAMPUS HOUSING RULES
The following policies are excerpts from the Union Student Handbook. As guests of the university, all NITOC attendees staying in Union housing are expected to abide by these rules throughout their stay; failure to comply may result in fines and/or loss of on-campus housing privileges. Parents and/or chaperones are responsible for the conduct of minors in their care. Please read these and refer to them as necessary. Thank you!

Alcohol

  • No alcohol is permitted on campus.

Appliances

  • Coffee pots, crock pots, microwaves, and toaster ovens may be brought; however, deep fryers and hot plates may not be used.

  • Irons should have an automatic-off feature. Ironing must not be done on a bed or the carpeting.

  • To avoid potential safety hazards, all electrical appliances should be no more than 1000 watts and must have “UL” approval and be properly maintained.

Building Access

  • Please enter and leave the dormitory by using the front door. Crawling through the windows is prohibited. Violations will be subject to discipline and a $100 fine.

Bicycles

  • Please do not bring bicycles onto the grounds of Union.

Candles, Incense, Open Flames

  • Candles (including birthday candles), open flames, and incense are not permitted in the residence halls.

Fire Hazards

  • Containers that contain any flammable materials/liquids are considered fire hazards and are not permitted in the residence halls.

Fire Safety

  • Evacuation routes are posted in each room or suite.

  • All residence halls are equipped with fire protection devices including smoke detectors, emergency lights, fire alarms, fire extinguishers, and exit lights.

  • Tampering with, or misuse of any fire protection device will result in immediate disciplinary action and up to a $200 fine.

Furniture

  • Each room is equipped with university furniture, which can be moved within the room but must be used in the way it was designed.

  • Furniture is not to be moved from your room but must be in the original location and condition when you check out.

Keys

  • All suite-mates are mutually responsible for keeping the living room door locked, locks functioning, windows locked and keys under control for the security of persons and property. Report any problem with your key or lock immediately. Do not loan out your keys, tamper with the lock, prop the door open, or hide keys. Lost keys will result in a $25 replacement fee to Union.

Laundry

  • Residents with laundry units in their apartments are required to clean the lint traps and filters in their unit. Failure to do so will cause a mechanical malfunction of the unit, and the residents will be responsible for all charges associated with the repair or replacement of the unit. You are responsible for furnishing your own laundry detergent.

  • Residents in Heritage will find laundry units on the first floor of the McAfee Commons.

Loss and Theft Liability

  • Union University assumes no responsibility for any loss or damage to personal possessions resulting from theft, fire, power outages, water, or other disasters. Guests are urged to take all possible precautions to protect their belongings (including locking the door, proper surge protection for electronics, and taking valuable personal belongings with you).

Maintenance Requests

  • All maintenance needs should be reported to the NITOC On-Campus Housing Coordinator, who is the point person working with Union for our on-campus needs. Please do not contact Union Facilities Management personnel directly.

  • Any emergency repairs such as water leaks should be reported immediately, as well as smoke detector batteries or light bulbs as needed.

  • Maintenance personnel will knock and announce their presence before entering an apartment.

Privacy Policy

  • Please respect the privacy of other guests

  • Dress modestly when in public and/or mixed-gender areas.

  • Do not enter gender-segregated areas (bedrooms, dorm rooms/apartments, bathrooms) that house the opposite gender.

Quiet Hours – Minimize music, voices, noise, etc, that would disturb the rest of others during these times

  • “Quiet hours” are between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. the next morning. Courtesy hours are in effect 24-hours a day, however. If a neighbor asks you to be quieter, please respect their request.

  • Please respect these times by keeping noise to a minimum, so that resident competitors and judges can get a reasonable amount of undisturbed prep time and/or rest. 

Smoking Policy

  • Union University prohibits smoking anywhere on campus. Union University is a tobacco-free campus.
